Swearing...Needing your opinions and thoughts
Hey everybody
Well, just over the past few weeks, I’ve been sort of noticing how much people swear and curse and mainly well… Christians who swear, is it wrong? Hoping to get some ideas from everybody…
Firstly, what am I defining as swearing? Well you all know the words, f-word basically… c-word and the s-word, but the thing with s*** is that it’s so widely used that it is accepted now…so I’ll be rambling about that too.
Anyway, why am I blogging about this? I just find more so when I witness and hear other Christians swearing, I gulp inside and really want to shout out, was that necessary etc. Also being someone who used to swear and curse and swear more, and now, I’ve basically stopped (not completely) and NOT out of obligation but just that I felt it was unnecessary and rude…offensive. I do on occasions during frustration (Basketball), slip out something that I regret but I can say without guilt that I’m not a swearing person now. So I’ve been seeing Christians swearing all the time or maybe I’ve started noticing it more. You know, the first time I went to scripture class this year, I saw a lot of people I would never had thought they were Christians purely because they swore on a regular basis. Are we providing a poor witness?
Now to look at some bible verses, Cheers to Alan and Marg for these verses:
So yeah I was led to read the book of James and there are lots of solid things to think about…
In James 3, there is heaps of stuff: (NLT)
6
And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is full of wickedness that can ruin your whole life. It can turn the entire course of your life into a blazing flame of destruction, for it is set on fire by hell itself.
7-8
People can tame all kinds of animals and birds and reptiles and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil, full of deadly poison.
9-10
Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it breaks out into curses against those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!
Ok so 3:6 says our tongue, what we say, can be the root of a lot of evil. 7-8 talks about how it can be uncontrollable… so DO NOT feeling guilty if you swear but, as it says in 9-10… that instead…that maybe we should recognize that it’s something that isn’t right, Because… as it says, with the same ‘tongue’ we’re praising and praying to God as we are swearing… so yeah, something to really think about it.
9-10
Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate when people say unkind things about you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God wants you to do, and he will bless you for it. For the Scriptures say
If you want a happy life and good days,
keep your tongue from speaking evil,
and keep your lips from telling lies.
That’s s*** - that’s crap
What the **** - what the hell
Something that I really need another couple of opinions on!
Anyway that’s about it, but I’ll be adding if people are going to discuss with me and conclude things up in a couple of days(don't be shy... we're not hear to judge each other yeah?) ! Cheers and cya! Oh man! CHURCH CAMP IS NEAR!
keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.

w00t - haha
lets see good good
but in terms of substituting words
the line between if its ok or not is soo blurred
like for example i classify this as ok
you've had a hard day at work - so at the end of the day instead of saying
"F***, that was a long day"
you say
"Far out, that was a long day"
now here we go - saying something ugly or very bad/poor is "S***"
like
"Yo that TV show is so S*** because it got S*** ratings because it performed poorly"
so you say
"Yo that TV show is so crap because it got crap ratings because it performed poorly"
so for people who think substituting words for swear words is bad then what about this???
"Yo that TV show is so bad because it got bad ratings because it performed poorly"
so does that mean that is wrong as well??
well i say no
so whats your opinion??
hmmmz... yeah I don't think swearing is necessary. But I also don't think substituting words for swearing is good either. BUt then, I rather people say a substitution for a swear word than saying the swear word.
yep.. agree more with gulia.. sometimes we think substituting is a better way of saying what we feel.. but the thing is.. u notice how swear words are usually to do with something bad.
God tells us to use our mouths with blessings and not curses.. that means praising all things that are God given and God breathed, rather than condemning things.
And if something is really duh.. just avoid it.. why watch it and bag it out if u know its bad for u, or the show in itself is bad.. and ull end up picking up the bad influence.
Jesus didnt go around substituting bad words with other words.. has he ever said 'oh fudge, whats up with those people who keep persecuting me'... no..
Jesus always blessed them dispite how he may have felt, or how his day was going, or what he thought of others.
and yes, swearing is being a bad witness. though, all of us are guilty at some point. So its really important to guard our mouths-and in effect, our hearts on how we're feeling.
SO yeh! Keep up with the blessings!
LOL but then what if to curse wasnt your intention in the first place?
like i had a bad and long day as in i was soo tired etc etc
and also that bad TV ratings example
LOL - there is no feeling to it - it's based on fact hence saying "performed poorly"
look into the context that of words - it could imply that it performed poorly by someone looking at the tv ratings on the tv guide or the internet - then afterwards in a conversation someone might quote the performance of the show, in order to help someone decide whether they wanna watch it or not
ahaha - so many variations to the meaning of words
BWAHAHAHA this topic can go on forever
cos there are so many different factors to "swearing" and "cursing" - really this topic should be refined to MALICE AND EVIL TOWARDS OTHERS - cos thats what the bible references attack (from my perspective)
MISSION - TO FIND A BIBLE VERSE ON SWEARING
LIKE I SAID (to those who think im "for" swearing) THERE IS A BLURRED LINE IN HOW WORDS ARE USED
NOW we already know how to speak with malice and evil towards others because (we should all admit) we have done it before
So now i'll focus on the blurred line of people misunderstanding and judging
im not "for" swearing - im just saying swear words are made up
what really matters is the meaning behind the way words are used
HERES WHAT I MEAN - what if some people were mistaken and brought up retartedly - and eveything they knew was the opposite of what the world thinks on how to use words
THIS IS WHAT I MEAN
a normal person called A could sincerely say "this person is sooo beautiful and smells like roses"
now this dude really means what he says
now the retarted person B comes up and says the same thing - but from the way hes brought up he says "this person is ugly and smells like S***"
so from our perspective - we could think that B means what he says - being an ugly person and smelling bad
where as from his perspective - he really has the same perspective of A, with the person being beautiful and all
REMEMBER - person B has no idea that in our minds, we think hes speaking with malice and evil
and we have no idea that hes speaking with words of love from the way hes retartedly been brought up
SO WHOS WRONG!?!?!?!?
this shows the flaws of people judging, and that people dont have the capacity to FULLY know what another persons thinking
bwahaha....
depends on how you use it and what's behind it...as ronnie says
sleep time for camp hehe
